The San Francisco Chronicle has published a story about Joseph Stendig's fight against InterMune. He is suing the company because they have denied his request for Pirefenidone, an experimental drug that may someday be used to treat pulmonary fibrosis. Stendig contends that his request should be granted, as he will sign a waver releasing InterMune from liability should the drug have no effect or worsen his disease. Stendig further claims that InterMune is specifically delaying the development of this drug because it would dampen the profits from their current anti-fibrotic Actimmune. The full story can be found here .

Thanks Greg. That article is very interesting and has new info re: InterMune. I checked out the Shionogi site again and found out that they applied for an NDA in Dec. 2002. I don't know whether this is under the orphan drug classification or not. Anyway that is good news. Perhaps a Japan trip is in the works if I can afford it.

Joe did us all a big favor (I hope). He got InterMune to "thank him" (LOL) for bringing all of this to their attention (or some other rubbish). Anyway, the Pierfenidone trials will continue etc. etc. Well done Joe. Check out www.fightingpulmonaryfibrosis.org for more specific info.
